Underground Storage Tanks
The Environmental Health Division of Fargo Cass Public Health helps supervise the removal of underground storage tanks. In the past, these tanks were often constructed of bare steel, which is very likely to rust and leak. Underground storage tanks usually hold fuel oil, gasoline, diesel or other petroleum products.
The Environmental Health Divison works with the Fargo Fire Department to ensure that these tanks are removed safely. Inspectors monitor soil and groundwater that is in close proximity to the tank for potential contamination. They also ensure that any contaminated soil is removed and hauled to the appropriate facilities and any contaminated groundwater is not pumped into the storm sewer system.
