Benefits and Pay

Our benefits include the following:

Annual Leave: 96 hours per year for the first year. This continues to increase, based on years of service, to a maximum of 192 hours per year.

Sick Leave: One working day per calendar month of full-time service.
This continues to increase, based on years of service, to a maximum of one and one-half working days per calendar month.

Holiday leave:  10 paid holidays per year: New Year’s Day, President's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day; employees are also given eight hours annually for their birthday.

Family and medical leave: The City of Fargo will grant up to 12 weeks of family and medical leave during any 12-month period to eligible employees.

Longevity pay: An employee receives longevity pay after 10 years of service. This is in addition to the employee’s current pay step.

Uniforms: Equipment and uniforms are provided. 

Pension: Employees and the city contribute to the Police Pension Plan. The pension pays 2.65 percent per year of service of the average employee’s best three years’ salary. The employee is vested at 10 years and can draw on his/her pension at age 50. There is no cap on the amount the retired employee can draw.

Self-improvement program (continued education): The City of Fargo will pay a maximum of $300 toward work-related, post-secondary higher education or vocational/technical school courses. Each course must be pre-approved by the Chief and Human Resources Director.

Health insurance: The City of Fargo pays $434.36/month for single health coverage, and the employee pays $70.70/month. The City of Fargo pays $878.56/month for family health coverage, and the employee pays $341.66/month.

Dental insurance:  The City of Fargo pays the premium for single dental insurance coverage. The employee pays the additional cost for family members. For a spouse only, the employee pays $35.96/month; for children only, the employee pays $47.12/month; and for complete family coverage, the employee pays $83.48/month.

Wellness program:  Employees may participate in a confidential yearly health risk assessment. The City of Fargo pays the cost. 

Pay Scale for Fargo Patrol Officers   

The Fargo Police Department operates on an 11-step pay scale. Employees receive a new step every year until they reach step 11.

The first pay step for Police Patrol Officers is $49,400/year, which is equal to $23.75/hour.

The 11th pay step for Police Patrol Officers is $64,189/year, which is equal to $30.86/hour. Additional pay is given for longevity or years of service.

Officers who receive promotions are placed on a higher 11-step scale.
