Look Around Downtown

tourbookcover2In May 2006, the City of Fargo, through a grant from the State Historical Society of North Dakota, published an updated version of the "Look Around Downtown" brochure that was first printed in 1985. This free brochure is in the form of a self-guided walking tour that showcases 57 of downtown Fargo's historic buildings on both a north route and a south route.  In addition, there are nine other points of interest included in the brochure but not on the actual walking tour. Watch for tour route markers on many of the buildings!

The 2006 booklet was printed in limited numbers, and our supply quickly ran out. In May 2007, with a grant from the Fargo Moorhead Heritage Society, the City of Fargo printed 10,000 revised copies of the new brochure. "Look Around Downtown" is now available at all three Fargo Public Library locations.

Copies of the brochure can be downloaded in PDF format

Companion Narrative

In the fall of 2007, the City of Fargo, through a grant from the State Historical Society of North Dakota, produced a recorded narrative for the "Look Around Downtown" walking tour brochure. It is narrated by Merrill Piepkorn, and can be downloaded from our website for use in your own MP3 player. You can listen to the recorded narrative as you experience the self-guided tour with the "Look Around Downtown" brochure. A limited number of pre-recorded CDs are available at the Fargo Planning Department, 241-1474.

The narrative is in three parts. Click on the following links to download the narrative files in a zipped format:

  • Disc One, Northern Route (8.1 MB) This disc corresponds to the Northern Tour Route in the "Look Around Downtown" brochure.
  • Disc Two, Southern Route (8.81 MB) This disc corresponds to Southern Tour Route in the "Look Around Downtown" brochure.
  • Disc Three, Fargo History (20.8 MB) This disc offers additional historical background, and is largely based with permission, on the book "Fargo, 1870 to 1940" by David B. Danbom and Claire Strom, published in 2002. The book, which is a pictorial history of the city, can be purchased at Zandbroz bookstore on Broadway.
