American Elm

Ulmus americana

This tree is perhaps the most beloved of them all.  It is extremely easy to plant and establish, grows fast, thrives in harsh climates, and provides a beautiful arched canopy over city streets.  As we well know, Dutch elm disease (DED) has been wreaking havoc with these trees nationwide for 70+ years.  With the implementation of a DED program, we limit the loss of American elm to 1-3% annually.

Coincidentally, the return of the American elm is not far off.  Prairie Expedition Elm (developed at NDSU) and Valley Forge Elm are slated for introduction in the next few years.
